CARLOS MAHONEY TEACHES AT NORTH CAROLINA ADVOCATES FOR JUSTICE VOIR DIRE CLE
On April 8, 2011, Carlos E. Mahoney presented insights at the North Carolina Advocates for Justice jury selection “Voir Dire Trial Skills: Putting Theory Into Practice” continuing legal education program in Cary. Mr. Mahoney played the role of a “Live Trial” lawyer, demonstrating voir dire techniques for the CLE attendees. He is a frequent presenter at CLE programs addressing trial skills.
Court of Appeals affirms jury verdict obtained by Carlos Mahoney
The North Carolina Court of Appeals recently affirmed a jury verdict obtained by Carlos Mahoney on behalf of the Firm’s client in the case of In re Will of Baitschora, __ N.C. App. __, 700 S.E.2d 50 (2010). In the case, a Durham County jury set aside the contested will in 2008 on the grounds of undue influence.
Carlos Mahoney elected to ACLU National Board
Carlos Mahoney was elected on March 18, 2011 to serve as North Carolina’s representative on the ACLU National Board of Directors. He recently completed a two-year term as President of the ACLU of North Carolina.

National Class Action Case against Embarq is Certified in Federal Court
Stewart W. Fisher is pleased to announce a ruling in a Federal Employment Class Action. The case is Fulghum, et al. v. Embarq Corporation, et al., 07-CV-2602 in the US District Court for the District of Kansas. Judge Eric Melgren ruled that the retirees of Embarq can proceed as a class in a nationwide class action to attempt to recover the medical insurance, life insurance, and pharmacy benefits that were cut-off in July, 2007. Plaintiffs are suing for violation of the federal retirement law (ERISA) and for age discrimination. About 13,000 retirees nationwide will now join the lawsuit. Stewart W. Fisher will speak about Negotiation of Severance Agreements at a continuing legal education program at the North Carolina Advocates for Justice in Raleigh on February 4, 2011.
