WILLIAM MILLS AND STEWART FISHER NAMED NORTH CAROLINA SUPER LAWYERS FOR 2012
William S. Mills and Stewart W. Fisher were selected for inclusion in North Carolina Super Lawyers 2012. Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process is multi-phased and includes independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations. Bill Mills was named as a Super Lawyer in Plaintiff’s Personal Injury Law and Stewart Fisher was named to the Top 100 North Carolina Super Lawyer list for Employment and Labor Law.
CARLOS MAHONEY AND JESSICA LEAVEN NAMED RISING STARS
Carlos E. Mahoney and Jessica E. Leaven were named North Carolina “Rising Stars” for 2012. Rising Stars have been identified by Super Lawyers as top lawyers in North Carolina who are 40 years old or younger or who have been in practice for 10 years or less. No more than 2.5% of North Carolina attorneys are selected for this prestigious list. Carlos Mahoney was selected for General Litigation and Jessica Leaven for Employment and Labor Law.
CARLOS MAHONEY NAMED TOP 40 UNDER 40 BY NATIONAL TRIAL LAWYERS
In February, 2012, Carlos E. Mahoney was named by the National Trial Lawyers to its Top 40 Under 40 list in North Carolina. Membership into The National Trial Lawyers Association: Top 40 under 40 is by invitation only and is extended exclusively to those individuals who exemplify superior qualifications, trial results, and leadership as a young lawyer under the age of 40. Selection is based on a thorough multi-phase process which includes peer nominations combined with third-party research.
STEWART FISHER AND CARLOS MAHONEY PANELISTS AT LAW EVENTS
On February 10, 2012, Stewart W. Fisher was a panelist at an Employment Law CLE sponsored by the North Carolina Advocates for Justice. The topic of the panel was preparing for damages early in an employment case. On February 17, 2012, Carlos E. Mahoney appeared as a panelist at Duke Law School’s Careers in Service Symposium.
JESSICA LEAVEN ELECTED TO BOARD OF NCAWA AND AS CHAIR OF NCAJ EMPLOYMENT SECTION
On September 16, 2011, Jessica E. Leaven was elected to the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys. She will serve as Chair of the NCAWA Career Support and Advancement Committee. During the June 2011 North Carolina Advocates for Justice Summer Convention, Ms. Leaven was also elected Chair of the Employment Law Section. As Section Chair, she will also serve on the NCAJ’s Board of Governors.
COURT OF APPEALS OPINION ISSUED IN FRALEY V. GRIFFIN
The North Carolina Court of Appeals issued an opinion in Fraley v. Griffin, 720 S.E.2d 694 (2011) holding that an emergency medical technician is not entitled to public official immunity. William S. Mills and Carlos E. Mahoney successfully appeared in the case as amicus curiae counsel for the North Carolina Advocates for Justice. The case arises out of the tragic death of a star high school football player.

On November 18, 2011, William S. Mills served as co-chair of the NCAJ Deposition Skills Training CLE, a hands-on master class for plaintiffs’ attorneys. Carlos Mahoney served as an instructor at the seminar. On September 29, 2011, Carlos E. Mahoney spoke about mentoring and the importance of role models at a New Admittee Professionalism Program sponsored by the North Carolina Advocates for Justice. The attendees were new attorneys recently admitted to the NC Bar.
QUALIFIED IMMUNITY IN AN EXCESSIVE USE OF FORCE CASE ARTICLE PUBLISHED
Stewart W. Fisher and Carlos E. Mahoney authored Phelps v Carter Qualified Immunity Article. The article appeared in Trial Briefs, published by the North Carolina Advocates for Justice.
